Hacked Website? Investigate First, Then Recover Properly
Redirects, spam pages, strange admin users or a Google warning are signs to act on — calmly. Cleaning the visible symptoms is not enough if the attacker still has a way back in.
When a site is compromised, the visible damage — a redirect, injected spam, a defaced page — is usually only part of the picture. Attackers commonly leave backdoors, extra admin users or scheduled tasks so they can return after a quick clean-up.
A proper recovery follows incident-response basics: preserve evidence, work out how far the compromise reaches, remove malicious code or restore from a backup known to be clean, close the original entry point, rotate every credential and then watch for recurrence. Patching alone does not remove access an attacker already has.
Investigate suspicious files, redirects, accounts, and server activity.
Assess the likely scope of compromise.
Clean infected files and restore from trusted backups where appropriate.
Recommend credential rotation, access restrictions, and post-recovery monitoring.
Visitors from Google or mobile are redirected to unrelated sites.
Search results show pages in other languages or spam keywords you never created.
Unknown administrator users, files or scheduled tasks appear.
Your host suspended the account or Google Search Console reports a security issue.
Should I just restore yesterday's backup?
Only if you are confident the backup predates the compromise and you also fix how the attacker got in. Otherwise the same problem usually returns.
Do I need to report the incident?
Depending on the incident and the data involved, Indian law may require reporting to CERT-In or notifying affected people. We can point you to the relevant guidance; take legal advice for your specific situation.
